I know this was yesterday, but did you participate? I did, even though I wasn't home, but all the lights were out at home and in the hotel room, and I felt like I was doing something significant. We didn't have any candles, but the feeling was amazing.
In any case, I believe we should all take little steps toward helping our Earth stay alive every day. Things like taking the stairs instead of the elevator (unless you live in a skyscraper, of course), or using public transport when you can, switching your lights off every evening and recycling are little things we can all try to do in our day-to-day life.

We actually try to take steps every day, although it's nice to see people as a whole make a world-wide effort.
Some of the things I do in my daily life? Stairs instead of elevators (unless it's a really long climb. We live on the 6th floor and I'll use the stairs unless I'm carrying groceries). Making sure your computer is set to power-save mode after 15-20 minutes of no use. Turning lights out when you aren't in the room. Changing your regular light bulbs to the LED (or LCD? I forget off the top of my head) light-bulbs.
Here's one that most people don't think about. Hang your clothes out on the line instead of using the dryer. Do you know how much energy a dryer burns to produce heat? And no one can say they don't have room to hang their clothing to dry. All you need is 5 feet of open space and a piece of rope. Inside or outside it doesn't matter. Seriously. I love the soft feeling of clothing from the dryer as much as the next person, but it's a freaking waste of energy when you can simply let nature do its job and dry it for you.
